Breeches. She's a supercilious cat-o-mountain, and she loses no opportunity of insulting me, but after all she's a woman." "By-the-by, Waymark, " he added in a moment, "what a stunner the new governess is! You're a lucky dog, to sit in the same room with her. What's her name, I say?" "Miss Enderby. You've seen her, have you?" "I caught a glimpse of her as she came downstairs; it was quite enough; she floored me. She's never been out of my thoughts for a minute since I saw her. 'I love her, I love her, and who shall dare, to chide me for loving that teacher fair!'" "Well, yes, " said Waymark, "she has a tolerable face; seems to me a long way too good to be teaching those unlicked cubs. The dragon wasn't too civil to her, though it was the first day." "Not civil to her? If I were present, and heard that woman breathe the slight eat incivility, I'd -" He broke off in the midst of his vehemence with a startled look towards the door. "Mr. Egger, " he exclaimed, "a song; I beg, a song. Come, I'll lead off.
Atropine, scopolamine and synthetic analogues are still used as medicines, mainly to inhibit the effects of the parasympathetic nervous system. In order to prevent disturbing side effects, either the substances are applied locally eye drops for the examination of the retina, inhalation for respiratory diseases ; , or specific receptor blockers are developed tablets blocking gastric acid secretion to treat peptic and duodenal ulcers; box on page 54.
The objective of this study is to identify the main pollutant emissions due to the utilization of steel in Brazilian automobiles. Therefore it was performed Life Cycle Assessment LCA ; . LCA takes into account all the life cycle of a product, that is, from its extraction till its disposition. In order to perform this evaluation, the life cycle of the automobile was limited into three phases: materials manufacturing, automobile usage and discard. It was considered an automobile of 1.300 kg. Steel was chosen due to its high proportion in an automobile in weight terms. Besides, Brazilian automobile industry consumed 1.999 thousands of tons in 2001, which accounted for 12, 7% of the steel national production. Steel represents 878 kg of an automobile, considering that it is 67, 5% of the automobiles weight. Nevertheless, the functional unit was 263 kg, which represents 30% of the steel, due to the possibility of exchanging it for another material. Collected data of resources iron ore, clay, scrap and water ; and energy consumption mineral coal, vegetable coal, electricity, gasoline, alcohol ; , air pollutants NH3, CO2, CO, NOx, HC, SOx, MnO, SiO2, P2O5, HCN, HCl, Pb and particulate matter ; and solid residues production were from year 2000. Whenever possible, lack of data was fulfilled with estimations and the data was stored in worksheets. Sensibility analysis was performed for each life cycle stage. Main results showed that the automobile utilization and the materials manufacturing were responsible for most of the energy and resources consumption. The solid residues production occurs mainly in the discard, due to the low recycling level in the country. Sensibility analysis showed that the most important phase of the life cycle was the automobile usage, except for CO, SOx, particulate matter and solid residues production.

Besides, PBN 150-RES group showed FVC significantly lower when compared to the SAL-RES group. Our results showed that the higher PBN dose treatment 150 mg kg ; inhibited the development of reserpine-induced orofacial dyskinesia in mice, thereby corroborating the involvement of oxidative stress in orofacial dyskinesia. 109. EFFECT OF ONDANSETRON ON POTENTIATION OF HALOPERIDOL CATALEPSY BY NIFEDIPINE KHANZODE S. D., BELORKAR N. R., GOSAVI D. D. AND SHRIVASTAVA M. P. Department of Pharmacology, Indira Gandhi Medical College, Nagpur-440 018, Maharashtra, INDIA Haloperidol induced catalepsy is produced by blockade of dopamine DA ; receptors in striatal region. Potentiation of haloperidol induced catalepsy by nifedipine through its complimentary action by blocking synthesis and release of DA is reported. 5-HT modulates catalepsy through tonic inhibition of DA release. The interaction between nifedipine and ondansetron on haloperidol induced catalepsy was studied. Catalepsy was produced by haloperidol in albino rats wt 150200 gms. n 10 ; and scoring was done as per the method described by Costall and Naylor. Polyethelene glycol in 0.9% saline, nifedipine 5 mg kg ; and nifedipine plus ondansetron 1 mg kg ; were given intraperitoneally to control and test groups respectively. Least significant difference test was used for statistical analysis. Nifedipine significantly potentiated haloperidol induced catalepsy. Ondansetron pretreatment reduced this potentiation. Since there is tonic 5-HT inhibition of DA release, 5HT3 antagonist ondansetron probably has increased the DA release which might explain the reduction in catalepsy. 110. EFFECT OF INDIAN HYPERICUM PERFORATUM LINN ON ANIMAL MODELS OF COGNITIVE DYSFUNCTION KUMAR VIKAS, * , * SINGH P. N., * JAISWAL A. K. * AND BHATTACHARYA S. K. * * Pharmacology Laboratory, Department of Pharmaceutics, Institute of Technology. * Neuropharmacology Laboratory, Department of Pharmacology, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi -221 005, INDIA The effect of a standardized 50% ethanolic extract of Indian Hypericum perforatum IHp ; was investigated for putative nootropic activity on various experimental paradigms of learning and memory, viz., transfer latency on elevated plus-maze TL ; , passive avoidance PA ; , active avoidance AA ; , scopolamine and sodium nitrite induced amnesia SIA & NIA ; in albino rats. Pilot studies indicated that single dose administration of IHp had little or no acute behavioural effects, hence the extract of IHp was administered orally at two dose levels 100 and 200 mg kg, p.o. ; once daily for three consecutive days, while piracetam 500 kg, i.p. ; , a clinically used nootropic agent, was administered acutely to rats as the standard drug. Control rats were treated with equal volume of vehicle 0.3 % carboxymethyl cellulose ; . IHp and piracetam when given alone, shortened the TL on the first, second as well as the ninth day and also antagonized the amnesic effects of scopolamine and sodium nitrite on the TL.

Recent computational modeling and slice physiology studies have suggested that long-term encoding may depend on sustained spiking during brief memory delays in parahippocampal neurons, and that this persistent spiking activity is modulated by effects of acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors. Our recent functional magnetic resonance imaging fMRI ; study has shown that sustained parahippocampal delay period activity during delayed match-to-sample performance in healthy young individuals predicted subsequent memory of visual stimuli on a recognition memory assessment 20 min later Schon et al., 2004 ; . The current study combined this fMRI paradigm with a pharmacological manipulation to test whether this long-term encoding-related delay activity is reduced in subjects who receive the muscarinic cholinergic antagonist scopolamine before fMRI scanning. Subsequent memory was predicted by sustained activity during brief memory delays bilaterally in the perirhinal entorhinal cortex, in the right posterior parahippocampal and mid-fusiform gyri, and in the hippocampal body in healthy young individuals without a scopolamine challenge. This activity was reduced in subjects receiving scopolamine. The results are consistent with computational modeling data and behavioral pharmacological studies, suggesting that long-term encoding-related activity may be reduced if cholinergic receptors are blocked by scopolamine. Key words: memory formation; cholinergic; fMRI; medial temporal lobe; delayed match to sample; computational modeling and secobarbital.
At a minimum, the average cost of manufacturing, marketing, and administration needs to be covered, in addition to providing a return on the unknown ; investment in innovation. The costs of manufacturing, marketing, and administration for most drugs is relatively small on a per unit basis, but for some orphan drugs, with their small patient base, average manufacturing costs per unit may be relatively high.9 Typically we would expect considerable economies of scale in drug manufacturing, marketing.

Artificial respiration may be needed to counteract respiratory paralysis. Severe bronchospasm may be responsive to theophylline therapy. Older literature, however, suggests theophylline may increase occurrence of seizures in OP toxicosis. It is essential to avoid hypoxia. Scopolamine maybe of value when severe CNS depression is not responsive to atropine therapy, but this is not widely accepted. Diphenhydramine has been recommended at 1 - 4 mg kg per os every 6 - 8 hours to help control persistent nicotinic signs. Seizures may be controlled with diazepam or barbiturate anticonvulsants. Systemic acidosis may complicate OP or carbamate poisoning. Counteracting respiratory failure with atropine and or assisted ventilation are recommended for respiratory acidosis. Sodium bicarbonate administered at an initial dose of 5 mg kg IV can be used to correct metabolic acidosis. Subsequently, IV doses at 1 - 3 mEq kg may be required. Monitor acid base status. Animals should be monitored for the development of chemical pneumonitis due either to aspiration of hydrocarbon solvents when such formulations are ingested ; or for aspiration of gastric contents. Stress of OP or carbamate toxicosis may predispose animals to secondary clinical problems: e.g., hemobartonellosis, reported in OPpoisoned cats. If prolonged administration of high doses of atropine is anticipated, it is best to avoid preparations containing benzyl alcohol preservatives in species ages e.g., cats and all neonates ; susceptible to benzyl alcohol-related toxicosis see section on Benzyl alcohol ; . Delayed Neurotoxicity Neuropathy ; Certain OPs may cause a polyneuritis with paresis or paralysis primarily of the hindlimbs with degeneration of axons and myelin in the medulla, spinal cord, and peripheral nerve. This effect is not caused by acetylcholinesterase inhibition. One should be aware that for at least a few OPs including EPN, animals surviving acute poisoning as a result of therapeutic intervention may exhibit delayed neuropathy beginning a few weeks after the acute syndrome. Certain OPs, almost nontoxic with regard to acute poisoning, readily produce delayed neuropathy at low, otherwise non-toxic dosages. Most new OPs are evaluated in hens the preferred test animal ; for their ability to cause delayed neuropathy prior to marketing. This is discussed further under the heading "Toxicants Causing Paralysis.

J. R. Bradley, S. Thiru, W. C. Sessa; Department of Medicine, Addenbrooice's Hospital, Cambridge; Molecular Cardiobiology, Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA We have studied the cellular and subcellular distribution of endothelial nitric oxide synthase in normal and transplanted human kidney. In normal kidney, immunostaining for eNOS was present in glomerular endothelial cells and endothelial cells lining arteries and arterioles, but was most intense in peritubular capillaries. Although the subcellular distribution of staining can be difficult to visualize in flat endothelial cells lining blood vessels, intense perinuclear staining was observed in many cells. Studies in cuboidal high endothelial venules in lymph node microvessels and cultured endothelial cells have demonstrated that eNOS is a Golgi-associated protein, and mutation of eNOS to prevent Golgi targeting reduces nitric oxide synthesis and serostim.
Neurocognitive performance after staged bilateral carotid endarterectomy: a P300 auditory evoked potentials study R. Chiesa, M. Marrocco-Trischitta, G. Melissano, A. Kalberg, F. Setacci, L. Leocani Carotid artery disease has been shown to correlate with cognitive impairment and decline, likely as a result of silent cerebral ischemia and or chronic hypoperfusion. Hence, patients with critical carotid stenosis could benefit in terms of neuropsycological and cognitive function from surgical CEA. In fact, conflicting evidences have emerged form different studies, with authors reporting an improvement in cognitive test performance and others showing no beneficial effect or even a detriment from CEA. These controversial results are likely to be related to a number of methodological differences among the studies, and intrinsic biases of psychometric tests particularly relevant for follow-up studies. Cognitive P300 auditory-evoked potentials measurement represents an objective and validated measure of cognitive brain function, shown to be much more sensitive in the detection of metabolically induced cognitive brain dysfunction than psychometric tests or EEGs. In our study, we aim to assess cognitive brain function by means of P300 auditory-evoked potentials in patients with bilateral carotid stenosis 70% undergoing staged bilateral CEA, in order to evaluate the relative contribution of unilateral CEA to postoperative cognitive performance.

Observed between the TR deficient mice and their controls Fig. 4A ; . The comparably low baseline values are presumably caused by the fact that the experiments were performed in the daytime, when mice are normally less active. Cholinergic- and -adrenergic-receptor blockade. To determine whether the low heart rate is a tissueautonomous effect, a functional heart denervation was achieved by pharmacological blockage of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. After either 2 or 3 days of baseline registration a single dose of an anticholinergic agent scopolamine methyl bromide, 0.1 mg kg; Sigma ; was injected, resulting in a parallel increase in heart rate in the TR and TR- 1 deficient mice and wild-type controls Fig. 5 ; . A single dose of a nonselective -adrenergic-receptor blocker timolol, 1 mg kg; Sigma ; was then administered, which yielded a parallel decrease in heart rate in all animals Fig. 5 ; . We conclude that both animal types have intact responses to stimulation of the autonomic nervous system. The data also corroborates our previous suggestion that the low heart rate of the TR- 1-deficient mice is a tissue-autonomous defect. Body temperature and locomotor activity. TR- 1deficient mice have a reduced body temperature. Therefore, we wanted to determine the contribution of the Table 2. Time intervals in electrocardiogram complex in TR deficient and TR- 1 -deficient mice and wild-type controls.
To turn AutoFormat off completely, uncheck all the boxes and click OK. You should also turn AutoFormat off if your document is destined for plain text, or if you're going to paste and format it in a different program anyway. Also, be aware that curly quotes and bullets can turn into funny characters when pasted into an email. They look fine in Entourage email, but your recipient's email program may not translate them properly. And borders don't work at all. ; Later, you can turn the same plain text into a nicely formatted Word document by conducting a single AutoFormat pass, as described below. There's a checkbox for each feature that Word can autoformat. Here's what each AutoFormat option does: Headings. If you type a short phrase and press Return, Word interprets it as a heading and applies a big, bold style Heading 1 ; to it. Borders. Word draws a bold horizontal line across the page when you type three hyphens in a row or three underlines ; and press Return--a handy way to break up sections in a document, if that's indeed what you want. AutoFormat also creates a double line if you type three equal signs a dotted line for asterisks * a wavy line for tildes ~~~ and a triple, picture framelike line for number signs , ; . Press Return after the symbols. ; Later, you can reformat the line or turn it into a full border by clicking in the paragraph and using the Borders and Shading tools on the Formatting Palette page 130 ; . Patient Characteristics n 38 ; Mean SD ; 54 13 nal aorta, and T-acq acquisition time of sequence. Approximately 0.1 mmol kg body weight of gadolinium was injected at the same rate as the timing bolus 2.5 ml sec ; , also followed by a 15-ml saline flush. In all patients, 15 ml or less of gadopentetate dimeglumine was administered, including the timing bolus of 1 ml. Digital Subtraction Angiography Technique Intraarterial digital subtraction angiography was performed with a digital subtraction unit Polytron 1000; Siemens ; . A transfemorally inserted 5-French pigtail catheter was positioned to ensure placement of the side holes at the level of the origin of the renal arteries. After IV administration of 20 mg of butyl bromide scopolamine Buscopan; Boehringer-Ingelheim, Mannheim, Germany ; or 0.51.0 mg of glucagon hydrochloride GlucaGen 1 IE; Novo Nordisk, Bagsvaerd, Denmark ; , a bolus injection of 1: diluted 20 ml of iohexol Omnipaque 350 mg I ml; Nycomed, Oslo, Norway ; was injected intraarterially. A standard 10 left anterior oblique projection was used in most patients. If necessary, additional views anteroposterior or oblique ; were obtained or selective catheterization was performed. Image Analysis Digital subtraction angiography images were assessed by two independent observers who were unaware of MR angiography findings and of each other's interpretations. Subsequently, consensus was achieved for final interpretation in all cases. Likewise, two other observers independently interpreted the MR angiograms. The images were assessed for renal artery stenosis and accessory renal arteries. The intrarenal arteries were not assessed because the renal artery was truncated at the hilum in most patients because of the limited slab thickness. Each renal artery was analyzed for the presence of stenosis, which was graded on the basis of the most severe reduction of arterial diameter compared with an uninvolved renal artery segment proximal or distal to the stenosis. A renal artery was graded as normal grade 0 ; , mildly stenotic 1 49%, grade 1 ; , moderately stenotic 5075%, grade 2 ; , severely stenotic 7599%, grade 3 ; , or occluded 100%, grade 4 ; . A stenosis of 50% or more was considered hemodynamically significant. To obtain subtracted source images of MR angiography, the unenhanced images were subtracted from the enhanced images. For analysis of MR angiography, subtracted source images and maximum-intensityprojection images were printed on hard copy. If necessary, additional multiplanar reformation imaging or targeted subvolume ; maximum intensity projection was performed using the console of the MR imager or a workstation Sienet 1000; Siemens ; . Statistical Analysis Sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of MR angiography as a diagnostic test for renal artery stenosis were calculated using digital subtraction angiography as the method of reference. Because stenoses of 50% or more were considered hemodynamically significant, grades 0 and 1 stenoses were regarded as negative tests for renal artery stenosis and grades 2, 3, and 4 as positive tests for renal artery stenosis. The parameters were calculated for the patient group: a patient was positive for the disease if a unilateral or bilateral renal artery stenosis was present. Cohen's kappa ; analysis was used to test for agreement beyond that of chance between the two observers of MR angiography and of digital subtraction angiography determination of poor [ 0.00], slight [ 0.010.20], fair [ 0.210.40], moderate [ 0.410.60], substantial [ 0.610.80], and almost perfect [ 0.811.00] agreement ; . Kappa value was calculated with respect to the classification of the different grades of stenosis grades 04 ; and with respect to the presence grades 2, 3, or 4 ; or absence grades 0 and 1 ; of significant stenosis and scopolamine.
