The MRC Immunochemistry Unit, which occupies the first floor of the Rex Richards Building, underwent, earlier this year, a five-year review of its research programmes. All four of the main research programmes, carried out by Tony Day, Alex Law, Ken Reid, and Bob Sim, received high scores, and the visiting subcommittee recommended that the Unit receive funding over the coming five years up to April 2008. At the beginning of August 2002, MRC Council endorsed the Subcommittee's recommendations with respect to the research being carried out by Tony Day, Ken Reid, and Bob Sim, and in view of Alex Law's recent departure from Oxford to become Vice-Dean of Research at Nanyang University in Singapore ; , the future use of this senior post is presently being reviewed. The Immunochemistry Unit's general research theme encompasses the study of the structures and functions of novel proteins, and of newly identified defence mechanisms which are important in acquired and innate immunity. This theme is covered by the ongoing projects carried out by the four main research groups, i.e. via Tony Day's studies on the structures of hyaluronanbinding proteins and examination of their roles in inflammation in the extracellular matrix and in leukocyte migration; Ken Reid's and Bob Sim's research on mammalian lectins in the serum and lungs, and on components of the complement system. The visiting Subcommittee, in addition to awarding high scores to the Immunochemistry Unit's past and future research programmes, noted the Unit's successful records, over the period 1995 2001 in training postgraduate students 31 D.Phil. degrees and one M . awarded ; and its involvement in the publication of a large number 268 ; of original research papers and review articles during the five-year period under review. The Subcommittee also recommended that the Unit goes ahead with the purchase of a mass spectrometer, which will make a useful addition to the Unit's protein sequencing and amino acid analysis facility, which is accessed by many people in the Department. Of possible complications. Thus, many studies have been carried out to determine the predictive factors for the efficacy IFN therapy[12-19]. Response to interferon monotherapy is associated with several host and viral factors. HCV genotype 1b, low viral load, and rapid HCV RNA clearance from the serum have been identified as favorable predictors for a sustained response to IFN therapy [20-22]. Since Enomoto et al [23] reported that genetic variability in a 40 amino acid stretch amino acids 2209-2248 ; and mutations in the NS5A region of HCV and in designated interferon sensitivity determining region ISDR ; , has become a predictive factor for IFN therapy. Studies from Japan [23], Sweden [24] and Spain[25] have shown that ISDR is an effective predictor. However, studies from Western countries displayed that ISDR is not a good predictor[26-28]. Studies on the relationship between IFN- and ribavirin combination therapy and ISDR have controversial results[29-32]. Taylor et al[31] reported that a HCV envelope protein E2 ; contains a sequence similar to the phosphorylation site on eIF2- for the interferon-inducible cellular protein kinase PKR. The PKR-eIF2- phosphorylation homology domain PePHD ; on E2 may serve as a pseudosubstrate for PKR and inhibit its function, reducing the antiviral effect of interferon. Thus, the PePHD region might also be involved in IFN resistance of chronic hepatitis C to IFN therapy. However, the role of this region is also controversial so far[31]. In Korea, the HCV prevalence is about 1%-2%, but studies to analyze the predictive factors for combined IFN- and ribavirin therapy have not been performed. To identify these factors, we investigated the relationship between combined IFN- and ribavirin efficacy and a variety of factors such as ISDR sequence, PePHD sequence, age, ALT level, and HCV RNA titer in Korean patients with HCV genotype 1b. Stirrer speeds studied. This is because 70 wt.% of solids concentration with 0.04 wt.% Dispersant S40 exhibits a higher viscosity than 65 wt.% in the range of shear rates from 100 s- 1 to 1200 s- 1 Fig. 5 ; , which is within the range of shear rate distribution in the stirred media mill Lane, 1999 ; . It damps the motion of the grinding beads in the mill, and more energy is used to counteract the viscous resistance. Increasing stirrer speed improves the and ramelteon. Q: Mrs Bachiri, what can you tell us about the Ras massacre? A: What can I tell you ? During the Ras massacre, sixteen of my brothers, my milk brothers, were killed. One of them was seventy-five year old. He participated in the war of liberation. Seven of his children were [killed along] with him. His daughter came to visit them on that day. They were having a party, a marriage ceremony, one of the girls in the family was getting married. I was there, I was present. not when the massacre took place, no. the massacre occurred after I had left. So his guests [i.e. daughter, her husband and children] were staying overnight with him. Q: What is his name? I mean your brother'name? s A: The eldest is Guennouche Amara. The other brother, the younger one, was sixty years old. He was blind. He was born blind. Q: Was he killed too? A: Yes, they slaughtered him along with his seven children. They slit their throats. He is blind the poor guy. a blind man. what could he have done to deserve this? He is married to a lady who is not totally fit mentally. She gave him two sons and two daughters. The sons were dragged outside with their father and had their throats slit, whereas the daughters were taken away. One was twentyeight years old, the other was twenty-four. As for Amara, they first called him out, he said: 'why would they want to kill me? What did I do? They should go and sort out the patriots.' He acts both as an imam and caretaker for the local mosque. They told him: 'come out, we want a word with you'. When he came out they were there. with military uniforms and toting their guns. There were a few women with them. The women were wearing the hijab over a military uniform. One of the soldiers cut the finger of one of Amara'daughters and said to his colleague: 'take the s gold, take the gold'. Amara'2-year-old granddaughter was found burnt in the oven. His old daughter s [the guest], was slaughtered too. she was lying on the ground. they put one of her sons on her right arm, another son on the left arm and they shouted 'Allah Akfar'. We say: Allah Akbar [Allah is the Greatest]' but they were saying 'Allah Akfar' [Allah is the worst of the unbelievers]. They came in cars, in Landrovers. People who stayed at home were slaughtered, and those who went out were shot dead. My sister lives nearby. Her young son saw exactly what happened. He hid under a metallic sheet and saw what happened. Q: How old is he? A: He is about nine years old. He said they wore military uniforms. Their heads were covered with turbans, similar to those worn by the Touaregs. Their faces were covered. The soldiers were on standby nearby. In fact, the army unit was stationed near the mosque. So were did these killers come from? How could they go through the military unit near the mosque? Q: So did they kill both of your brothers and their families? A: Yes, they slaughtered both my brothers and their children. My brothers had seven each. A total of sixteen. Q: What about the house? A: They burnt it. We are puzzled. Why would anyone want to kill this family? They are not involved in anything. Their son in law, who was there on a visit, escaped miraculously. His wife helped him to get to the loft so that he could see what was happening. By the time he made it to the loft they [the killers] were " Voices of the voiceless" in Youcef BEDJAOUI, Abbas ARROUA, Meziane AIT-LARBI, An Inquiry , into the Algerian Massacres, op. cit., p. 212 sq.

Corticosteroid, thus necessitating multiple inhalations to provide an adequate dosage for most patients. It also has a very unpalatable aftertaste that patients find hard to tolerate. Azmacort Triamcinolone ; has a very effective and useful spacer, but it is a less potent corticosteroid that requires multiple puffs to be equivalent to a higher potency inhaled corticosteroid. They spoke to several specialists, including Dr. Roberts, Dr. Woodard and Dr. Demain and they all felt Pulmicort and Flovent should both be on the preferred drug list. They also suggested a lower potency steroid should be made available for patients with a less severe disease and children. Dr. Demain felt Aerobid was an inferior product and should not be considered for the preferred drug list. He felt Fluticasone was one of the best topical steroids available and he liked the fact that it came in three dosage preparations, which makes it easy to taper the medication down as the patient improves. Pulmicort is useful for patients with less sever asthma and pregnant asthmatics. Sandy Kapur said one of the specialists said that QVAR may be of greater use in children with croup than the other inhaled corticosteroids due to earlier studies. In response to Janice Stables, Sandy Kapur said since Pulmicort Respules was the only inhaled corticosteroid and was indicated for children from 12 months to 8 years of age, they would like to allow it for children less than 8 years of age. David Campana said an exception would be added in the system for the Pulmicort Respules. Diane Liljegren said the Pulmicort Respules were also very useful in demented or developmentally disabled people who just could not figure out how to use an MDI and she would prefer it was not limited to children. Clouds and aerosols, which are suspensions of fine particles in the atmosphere, are hard to represent and are a source of uncertainties in the numerical models used by climatologists. The Calipso mission, jointly led by CNES, NASA and CNRS, will resolve some of these issues. The lidar on board the satellite will make it possible to obtain the first vertical profiles of the Earth's atmosphere.
Anaesthetists who are part of a primary response team should be familiar with how to wear and how to operate in ; personal protective clothing and breathing apparatus. Decontamination is more effective against chemical weapon intoxication than biological weapon inoculation; it should be remembered that several of the biological agents are highly infectious, necessitating continued personal protection after hospital admission including barrier nursing, prophylactic antibiotic administration and vaccination ; . Life-saving treatment, both of the effects of CBWs and of concomitant trauma, may be required for patients before they are decontaminated. Resuscitation may be difcult; there may be uncertainty as to which CBW has been used and lack of staff, drugs antidotes and antibiotics ; and facilities particularly in view of the typical bed occupancy rate of casualty and intensive care units in the UK ; . Treatment may require prolonged ventilation and organ support in intensive care, decreasing the availability of this resource for other hospital patients. Despite the alarming projected fatality statistics quoted for a signicant chemical or biological weapon attack, mortality has historically been relatively low in instances of terrorist deployment of such weapons. Morbidity, however, has often been high, which in part reects a lack of medical preparedness for such an event. There is increasing recognition that medical outcomes may be improved by implementation of specic CBW mass casualty procedures in conjunction with the dissemination of relevant information concerning clinical management. The information contained in this review will enable anaesthetists and intensivists to understand the pathophysiology associated with CBWs, in order to instigate appropriate therapy and rationalize available resources and raptiva.

A particular call is disputed. On occasion, a caller may abandon a call, either intentionally or unintentionally. The WPS must be able to prove the connection was terminated at the discretion of the caller. The current system does not provide a 100% effective abandoned call indicator to log how and who terminates each call. If a caller were to suffer harm subsequent to terminating the call, and the WPS could not prove who ended the call, the Service could be exposed to some degree of liability. We understand that Centre management has identified this as a weakness and are in discussions with appropriate parties, but an adequate solution has not yet been determined. The current system does not provide access to an online policy manual nor does it provide pre-determined questions to aid the Complaint Handler in assessing the priority of a call. Through the RFP, the WPS wants to improve these areas of the system. The addition of these features would improve efficiency and the consistency of decisionmaking. A favorite theme of ours has been that extrapolation between complex systems is prone to error. The view has implications for reductionism and determinism. Pertinent to this, Arnold F. Goodman, Cludia M. Bellato and Lily Khidr wrote in The Scientist viii ; : Nearly two decades ago, Paul H. Silverman testified before Congress to advocate the Human Genome Project. He later became frustrated when the exceptions to genetic determinism, discovered by this project and other investigations, were not sufficiently incorporated in current research and education. In "Rethinking Genetic Determinism, " Silverman questioned one of the pillars of molecular genetics and documented the need for determinism's expansion into a far more valid and reliable representation of reality. He would receive correspondence from all over the world that reinforced this vision. Silverman firmly believed that we needed a wider-angled model, with a new framework and terminology, to display what we know and to guide future discovery. He also viewed this model as being a catalyst for exploring uncertainty, the vast universe of chance differences on a cellular and molecular level that can considerably influence organismal variability. Uncertainty not only undermines molecular genetics' primary pillars of determinism and reductionism, but also provides a bridge to future research. Various commentaries detail deviation from determinism within the cellular cycle. Here we use the term cellular cycle not in the traditional sense, but rather to describe the cyclical program that starts with gene regulation through transcription, translation, post-processing and back into regulation. Richard Strohman at UC-Berkeley describes the program in terms of a complex regulatory paradigm, which he calls "dynamic epigenetics." The program is dynamic because regulation occurs over time, and epigenetic because it is above genetics in level of organization. "We thought the program was in the genes, and then in the proteins encoded by genes, " he wrote, but we need to know the rules govern and relenza.
