Efficacy of new-type LPS Shigella sonnei vaccine SHIGELLVAC was assessed in double-blind randomized placebo-controlled clinical field trials. Under the guidance of Russia's NCA inhabitants living in two settlements of mid-Volga region with annual high incidence rate of Sh. sonnei infection in the summer-autumn season were immunized. The target population was composed of subjects between 3 and 60 years old. Volunteers were randomly allocated to two groups: 1802 received one injection of Sh. sonnei vaccine; 1266 received one injection of placebo . Only minimal sidereactions local redness, painfullness ; were registered after subcutaneous immunization of volunteers with 50 mg of vaccine. We defined Sh. sonnei shigellosis based on clinical symptoms diarrhoea ; associated with positive faecal culture for Sh. sonnei. Each group of volunteers was followed up 6 months from July 2001 to January 2002. Cases of culture-proven Sh.sonnei shigellosis occurred in both groups. We found that the protective efficacy of Sh. sonnei LPS vaccine was 92.4% during 6 month period of disease surveillance. Immunization with new type vaccine confers protection of civic population during season with maximal risk of spreading shigellosis Sonnei infection.

6 positively hedonic odors decrease the pain response in mice, while negatively hedonic odors increase the pain response. Thus, the stage was set for the possibility of peppermint odor to modify the pain response. A significant analgesic effect with a reduction in sensitivity to headache was produced by a combination of peppermint oil and ethanol Gbel, Schmidt, & Soyka, 1994 ; . Mauskop 2001 ; found that the external application of peppermint extract raised the pain threshold in humans. Further, Davies, Harding, and Baranowski 2002 ; note a case study of a 76-year-old woman whose pain had been resistant to standard therapies. The application of peppermint oil to her skin resulted in a significant decrease in her pain, with the duration of analgesia lasting between 4 and 6 hours after application. Raudenbush, Koon, Meyer, and Flower 2002 ; had participants undergo a cold pressor test and report their pain level using a 0-10 scale every 30 seconds, to a maximum of 5 minutes. The cold pressor test involved submersing the hand and forearm into a circulating water bath maintained at 3 degrees Celcius. During testing, participants wore nasal cannulas which administered either low-flow oxygen, peppermint odor plus oxygen, or jasmine odor plus oxygen. Physiological measures heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation ; were recorded throughout the protocol. Participants then completed three questionnaires. The first questionnaire was the NASA-TLX NASA Task Load Index; Hart & Staveland, 1988 ; , which is a subjective scale of mental and physical workload. This multi-dimensional scale measures specific components of workload in a given task along three dimensions related to demands imposed on the participant by the task mental, physical, temporal ; and three dimensions related to the interaction of the participant and the task effort, frustration, performance ; . The second questionnaire was the Profile of Mood States POMS; McNair, Lorr, & Droppleman, 1971 ; . This instrument contains a list of 65 adjectives concerning current mood and provides sub-scale scores related to fatigue, vigor, and anxiety. Finally, participants completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory STAI; Spielberger, Gorsuch, & Lushere, 1970 ; . This inventory consists of 40 statements related to anxiety and percodan.

Aromatherapy Alive! By Karen Wallwork Karen Wallwork recently returned from an aromatherapy study tour in France. While there, she witnessed essential oil production from field to bottled product, and attended many illuminating presentations. In this article she reports on the highlight of her trip the presentation by Dr Daniel Penoel. I was very fortunate to have class time with Robbie Zeck ND, Dr Kurt Schnaubelt, Monika Haas and Dr Daniel Penoel MD. All the presenters had their own unique insights into aromatherapy, but for me, it was Dr Penoel's presentations that hit a chord deep within. He was extremely passionate inspired us with his knowledge and enthusiasm. He is a medically trained doctor with essential oils his pharmaceuticals of choice. He arrived sporting a hunting jacket loaded with essential oils this was his ammunition against disease his emergency kit. The essential oils chosen for the kit where considered safe, simple and easy to use by the general public. They were also versatile and readily available without being too expensive. There were some interesting choices in his kit * : 1. Peppermint - acute local pain trauma ; , headaches, difficult digestion, nausea, travel sickness, blocked nose 2. Eucalyptus Radiata - Viral infections and respiratory problems 3. Tea Tree - Your first anti-infectious weapon 4. Geranium - For wounds "of body and soul" 5. Tropical Basil - basic antispasmodic 6. Lavender - Calming, Soothing, Antispasmodic 7. Lemon - digestive, cicatrisant 8. Carrier Oil - for dilution and to decrease irritation from EOs My add-ins would be Marjoram and German Chamomile. He set about teaching us using his `Triptychs' which is a set of three prints showing one single image, that he applied throughout. He challenged our traditional training of pigeonholing certain essential oils for various conditions. He asked that we analyse each condition into its patho-physiological aspects e.g. inflammation, infection etc ; . From there, select aromatic molecules from the functional groups e.g. phenols, alcohols, etc ; to address the manifestations e.g. mucous, cough etc ; . We then applied our `holistic' framework the health strength of the client, compliance etc.
The government is waging an aggressive, intemperate, unjustified war on pain doctors. This war bears a remarkable resemblance to the campaign against doctors under the Harrison Act of 1914, which made it a criminal felony for physicians to prescribe narcotics to addicts. In the early 20th century, the prosecutions of doctors were highly publicized by the media and turned public opinion against physicians, painting them not as healers of the sick but as suppliers of narcotics to degenerate addicts and threats to the health and security of the nation. Since 2001 the federal government has similarly accelerated its pursuit of physicians it says are contributing to the alleged rising tide of prescription drug addiction. By demonizing physicians as drug dealers and exaggerating the health risks of pain management, the federal government has made physicians scapegoats for the failed drug war. In that they are generally legitimate, well-meaning professionals who keep accurate records, pain physicians also present a better target than underground, blackmarket drug dealers for a DEA that has been subject to increasing criticism from Congress and the Department of Justice for its inability to measurably reduce the domestic drug supply. Even worse, the DEA's renewed war on pain doctors has frightened many physicians out of pain management altogether, exacerbating an already serious health crisis--the widespread undertreatment of intractable pain. Despite the DEA's insistence that it's not pursuing "good" doctors, it isn't hard to see how rhetoric from law enforcement officials and prosecutors would make doctors think otherwise. Hurwitz's prosecutor, for example, promised to root out bad doctors "like the Taliban."159 Another assistant U.S. attorney said, upon the sentencing of one doctor to eight years in prison for having worked for 57 days at a pain clinic: "I believe and I hope that this case has and pergolide.

Patient characteristics are summarized in Table 1. Thirty-six patients entered the study between October 1997 and September 2001. Twenty-four patients had adenocarcinoma and 12 had SCC. Thirty-three patients 92% ; had metastatic disease, with the majority having distant lymph node [26 33 79% ; ] and liver metastasis [12 33 36% ; ]. Three patients had an unresectable primary tumour. Prior oesophagectomy with curative intent had been performed in five patients. No patients had prior chemotherapy while three patients SCC ; had prior radiotherapy. Thirty-five patients were assessable for response. One patient was not evaluable for response due to delay of treatment and response evaluation after a gastric bleeding requiring surgery. Of the 35 evaluable patients, 33 had bidimensionally measurable disease. The remaining two patients both with stable disease ; could only be evaluated unidimentionally due to prior surgery and tumour localization, respectively.
P-153M: 2, 3-SIGMATROPIC REARRANGEMENTS OF AZASULFONIUM SALTS IN NATURAL PRODUCTS SYNTHESIS Yolisa L. Mdlalo, Denzil R. Beukes Faculty of Pharmacy, Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa. The 2, 3-sigmatropic rearrangement of azasulfonium salts of anilines to o-alkyl--thioalkoxy substituents provides a convenient route to the synthesis of ortho-alkyl anilines. This reaction has been extensively investigated by Gassman and co-workers in the early seventies [1] and has found application in the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds. It initially attracted our attention during the course of our synthesis of highly substituted indole alkaloids. In the present study we explored the effect of various substituents on the rearrangement of azasulfonium salts synthesized from meta-substituted anilines. A variety of azasulfonium salts were synthesized from their corresponding aromatic amines including 6aminoindanone, 3-aminobenzaldehyde and ethyl 5-aminoindole-2-carboxylate ; and treated with base e.g. triethylamine ; to give the azasulfonium ylide which undergoes a Sommelet-Hauser type rearrangement to the othiomethoxymethylaniline Scheme 1 ; . The regiochemistry of the reaction of meta-substituted aromatic amines is affected by the electronic character of the substituent. Electron withdrawing groups favour substitution ortho to the meta substituent while electron donating groups direct substitution to the para position. [1] Gassman, P.G; Gruetzmacher, G.D; J. Am. Social-cognitive consequences. We extend this analysis by arguing that these consequences occur for a ; speakers, b ; recipients, and c ; a collective consisting of the speakers and recipients. The second class of unintended consequences has to do with how features of a language, or common linguistic practices, influence social cognitive processes. We argue that if a type of language use occurs prevalently, then specific instances of this language use type can have long-term effects on social cognition. Figure 1 summarizes our theoretical assumptions while depicting the relationships between a specific instance of token language use and the totality of language use types language as an abstract system ; . The underlying assumptions are that a ; speakers and listeners cooperate with each other to construct a particular instance of language use during their social interaction, b ; this particular instance of language use affects their cognitions, c ; this type of language use may be so prevalent that it can be understood as part of the totality of the language system, and d ; at this point the language system can be said to influence the social cognitions of its users. The following sections are organized in accordance with the two time frames of unintended consequences of language use. We first address the microinteractional level and short-term implications of a ; and b ; by arguing that different aspects of language affect speakers' and listeners' social cognition through its use as a semiotic tool for meaning production and exchange. We then broaden the time frame and consider the ways in which language as an abstract system can be said to influence the social cognitions of its users through linguistic practices c and d and perphenazine.

Upon review of the data generated it was experimentally determined that the isolation and assay e.g., 0.075 0.04 % W W ; of CBD, from Cannabis sativa using traditional alcoholic solvent extraction was precise. Additionally it has been experimentally determined that the isolation of CBD using pyrolysis techniques e.g., M-1 Combustion ; and vaporization e.g., Volcano ; resulted in 200% and 121% efficiency respectively. The increased mass isolated is suspected as being due to thermal conversion of cannabinoid species to CBD under the conditions investigated. This assessment is supported by the following tabular data. Table 13. HPLC-DAD-MS quantitative results: CBD and phenelzine.
| With time. In rats, after sciatic nerve repair, the number of nerve fibers in the distal segment three months after nerve injury increased but returned to normal after 24 months Mackinnon et al., 1991 ; . This is consistent with the idea that, as nerve fibers regenerate distally and appropriate connections with sensory motor terminals are achieved, the axon sprouts that have not made connections undergo a dying back or "selective pruning" process Brushart and Seiler, 1987 ; . In previous experiments, we used electrophysiological techniques to determine the incidence and distribution of branched pulpal axons supplying normal f erret mandibular teeth Foster and Robinson, 1993 ; . Electrical stimuli were applied to one tooth while activity was recorded in another, so that the orthodromic response initiated in one branch was propagated antidromically at the branch point and recorded in the other tooth. In ten animals, 14 axons which branched to supply two teeth were detected, and for 13 of these the teeth were adjacent. The branching points were always within the mandibular canal. We designed this series of experiments to determine the degree to which the distribution and characteristics of branched pulpal axons return to normal after various types of nerve injury. As described above, sprouting of axons at the injury site could lead to an increase in the number of branched axons, and growth of axons down inappropriate endoneurial tubes could alter the pattern of branching. If post-regeneration abnormalities were found, the experiments might reveal whether remodeling plasticity ; of the regenerated axons occurred after the initial recovery period; if some sprouts were eliminated with time, the normal pattern of distribution could be restored. We examined experimental groups six weeks, three months, and one year after nerve section to investigate whether remodeling occurred during the early or late period after reinnervation. The effect of a crush injury was examined after three months' recovery, since this type of injury would be expected to produce minimal disruption of the endoneurial sheaths at the injury site and might not be expected to cause branching at that point. Previous studies on regeneration of the inferior alveolar nerve after injury have been carried out in the rat Berger et al., 1983; Berger and Byers, 1983; Fried et al., 1991; Johnson and Owens, 1991 ; and cat Robinson, 1981; Fried and Erdelyi, 1982; Holland and Robinson, 1985 ; and have demonstrated good recovery, but none has investigated branching of axons at the injury and peppermint.
