There is a special project at the church where my wife Sara and I attend that I believe deserves special mention. One of our members, Kim Bullard, is founder of a clothing ministry known as Kate's Closet at St. James United Methodist Church. In this research I deal with the problem of developing service robots. This research area involves enabling robots to explore their environment, recognise entities within the environment, and interact with the environment to carry out some task. Service robots have to be aware of the environment they operate in, and require knowledge of the location, shape and nature of objects they are to interact with. To this end, I working on a technique to explore a novel environment using multiple low-cost robots, and to locate, model and classify objects within that environment. The system aims to coordinate a team of robots in a way that is optimal in terms of efficiency and of the accuracy of the map created and of the objects classified and modelled. An advantage of using multiple cooperative robots when exploring an environment is the increased accuracy that can be obtained. The system implements Cooperative Localisation, where visual contact is maintained between stationary observer robots and exploring robots. This utilises the ability of robots to accurately recognize and localise each other. This technique greatly increases the certainty in the robots' locations as opposed to a system where the robots do not cooperate. A consistent map is achieved by maintaining visual contact between robots, with different robots assigned roles of explorer and observer.
