Welcome to the thirteenth edition of your Journal. Due to increased demand from readers around Africa, the Journal has increased its frequency of publication to five times a year and the new format and content has been widely welcomed. According to the OECD, health care financing continues to be a key challenge in the developing world. Despite efforts to improve the provision of health services, many low- and middle-income countries are still far from achieving universal health coverage. An estimated 1.3 billion people do not have access to effective and affordable health care many of whom dwell in Africa. As documented by the World Health Organisation, developing countries bear 93% of the world's disease burden, yet account for 18% of world income and 11% of global health spending. Today, global spending on health is about 8% of global GDP US.5 trillion ; . In most African countries, access to health care is reserved to employees of the public and private sectors. Workers of the informal sector and rural areas account for over 90% of the workforce in Africa but find themselves in a peculiar situation of vulnerability resulting from the often difficult working conditions, lack of a long-term view and poor access to health care. In many African countries, the excluded people have understood that they can only rely on themselves to provide social protection responding to their needs. A recent study conducted by International Labour Organisation in collaboration with other international cooperation agencies has confirmed the phenomenon of the emergence of micro-health financing mutual societies in West and Central Africa. The members freely choose to join and pay their contributions regularly thus enabling them to have a fund to cover their health care. This edition examines examples of such developments which are a tribute to the initiative and drive of their members. As usual, we would welcome suggestions and comments from around Africa on articles and features for future editions.

This protein is found in the neuromuscular junction and is involved in binding agrin and aggregating the ACh receptors in the formation of the neuromuscular junction. In addition to the oral presentations, over 1500 poster presentations were submitted, some of which were undoubted highlights.The congress also included 30 educational sessions, 23 satellite symposia and a highly entertaining neurological tournament which featured Australia beating Thailand in the final.
