SUSCEPTIBILITY TO ALLERGIC CONTACT DERMATITIS G. Gerberick. Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati, OH. Two critical components play a significant role in determining whether an individual will become sensitized or not to a particular allergen: the inherent allergic potency of the sensitizer and the nature of dermal exposure to that chemical. However, in some instances, a difference in responses will be observed between two individuals who have had the same exposure to a specific chemical suggesting that other heritable or acquired factors are at play. While data are fairly limited in humans, we do have some information to suggest that age, sex and racial differences do not have a large influence, but rather, genetic factors and dermal integrity are likely to be more important in determining individual susceptibility. Genetic factors are not totally understood, but are clearly instrumental in determining individual susceptibility. Differences in metabolic capabilities might be expected to influence an individual's susceptibility to the induction of allergic contact dermatitis. It is well established that skin enzymes, predominantly located in the epidermis, can metabolize absorbed xenobiotics via reactions analogous to those in the liver. It has been hypothesized also that some HLA antigens may render individuals more susceptible to contact allergens. Another factor likely to impact individual susceptibility is overall inherent barrier function of the skin. The initial step in the induction and elicitation of allergic contact dermatitis requires that the allergen penetrate the stratum corneum. In some circumstances, the stratum corneum may be compromised due to disease e.g. psoriasis, eczema ; . However, healthy skin may have a compromised inherent barrier function e.g. dry skin ; as well. In summary, there are a number of factors, besides allergenic potency and exposure characteristics that are likely to contribute to inter-individual differences in susceptibility to the induction of ACD.

In addition, a number of other organizations are engaged in graduate-level training and education in aviation science and technology, including the research institutes under AVIC I and AVIC II and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. What is unclear is whether a network of non-degree-granting industrial-training organizations exists that provides short-term training in specific applications and techniques or whether such training is provided strictly within individual enterprises. If such organizations do not exist, this would be disadvantageous for China's aviation sector, because independent training firms are able to much more easily keep up with and disseminate state-of-the-art technology than are individual manufacturing firms, which are focused on production. China's aviation sector also appears to be developing a network of technology consulting and services companies. Such companies facilitate bringing new technologies to firms and supporting the technologies' implementation. In many industrial sectors in China, the reduction of government funding for industrial research institutes since the 1980s has caused these institutes to engage in such activities on a contract basis ; as a way of raising revenue. 16 In our chronic asthma model, we found that the increase in airway smooth muscle mass and collagen deposition that develops by Day 73, persists without resolution by Day 163, three months after the last allergen challenge. In this chronic asthma model, hypertrophy and hyperplasia of smooth muscle cells and myofibroblasts likely contribute to the increased airway smooth muscle mass. We previously demonstrated that montelukast, when administered during the period of airway allergen challenge, markedly reduced the increased airway smooth muscle cell layer 15 ; . We now show that CysLT1 receptor blockade administered for the 3-month period after the last allergen challenge reverses the persistent established increase in airway smooth muscle mass. CysLTs promote human airway smooth muscle hyperplasia increasing epidermal growth factor EGF ; -induced proliferation of these cells 52 ; . TGF and IL-13 each increase expression of the CysLT1 receptor in human airway smooth muscle cells 52, 53 ; . Our data suggest that CysLT1 receptor blockade treatment may reverse the established increase in airway smooth muscle mass in part by reducing the increased CysLT1 receptor expression on the smooth muscle cells in the lungs. Prior work has shown that concomitant treatment of dexamethasone during the period of allergen challenge in sensitized mice inhibits thickening of the airway smooth muscle layer without affecting epithelial thickening or subepithelial fibrosis 28 ; . In rat chronic asthma model with development of airway wall thickening, the increased fibronectin deposition persisted after the final OVA challenge and was not reversed by fluticasone treatment 13 ; . In this report, we found that dexamethasone did not reduce either the increased airway smooth muscle cell CysLT1 receptor expression or the established increase in airway smooth muscle mass.
